What is TMJ/ TMD?

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) is when one experiences severe pain in the joints of their temporomandibular joint due to arthritis, bruxism, genetics, misalignments, or other special circumstances. The temporomandibular joint is where your jawbone meets your skull. It’s very similar to the ball and socket joint in your hip. If you were to place your hands on either side of your face, you would feel the temporomandibular joint clicking when you chew/open/close your mouth.

TMJ/TMD Symptoms

How do you know if you need to visit a TMJ specialist? Well, there are a few things to keep your eyes open for. Here are some of the symptoms that are common with TMJ/ TMD:

  • Pain in the jaw
  • Discomfort around your ears

TMJ Solutions in Thornton

There are many solutions for those who suffer from TMJ/TMD including night mouthguards and splint therapy. Here are their differences:

  • Night Guards: By using a bruxism mouthguard, the guards keep individuals from grinding their teeth at night.
  • Splint Therapy: The “splint” is a removable guard that slowly corrects your bite and jaw. It also helps you relax your jaw, so you don’t feel as much tension in your jaw region.
